The Sora API is shut down: what to migrate to if your business generated AI video
If your company generated video through the Sora API, you have already noticed: since September 24, 2026 the calls return errors. And the last official route left, the sora-2 model on Azure Foundry, stops working on October 15, 2026. OpenAI has announced no replacement: on their retired-models page, the replacement column is empty.
This is not a temporary degradation or a version change. It is the shutdown of an entire product line, stated on the official pages themselves: OpenAI's Sora discontinuation notice and the Azure model retirement schedule.
What exactly got shut down
- OpenAI's Videos API, the whole thing: sora-2, sora-2-pro and every dated snapshot. Shut down on September 24, 2026.
- The sora-2 model on Azure / Microsoft Foundry: retired October 15, 2026. It was the last official way to keep generating.
- Previously generated videos were exportable for a while, but OpenAI deletes platform data after the export window.
If your pipeline made its calls from an n8n panel, ComfyUI, your own app or an API gateway, that node is dead and it is not coming back.
What to migrate to
The engines that are alive today (we check them in real time on this page):
Veo 3.1 (Google) - Available through the Gemini API or Vertex AI. - The only one on this list that generates native audio in sync with the video. - Billed per generated second; the exact price depends on the tier ("Fast" options are cheaper).
Runway Gen-4.5 - Own API, open sign-up. - Very good camera and motion control; predictable per-second pricing.
Kling 3.0 (Kuaishou) - Among the cheapest per second at high quality. - Heads-up: on some platforms it has country availability restrictions; confirm it for your account before building on it.
Other options covering specific niches: Seedance (ByteDance), Luma Ray, Pika. The sensible pattern today is not marrying any of them: keep the provider behind an interchangeable layer.
The lesson this leaves
Sora is the fourth major AI service to shut something down in just a few months. If you built your business on a single API with no plan B, you did not get unlucky: you had an unmanaged vendor risk.
The architecture that survives this is always the same:
- 1Your flow does not call the provider directly: it calls an intermediate layer of yours.
- 2The provider is a configuration, not a code dependency.
- 3There is a second backup engine ready, even if it never gets used.
- 4Someone watches the retirement calendars (every provider publishes theirs) before the blackout catches you.
What not to do
- Do not wait for it to come back. OpenAI has closed the entire line, not released a new version.
- Do not keep the workaround. The platforms that resold Sora access are just as dead, or already moved to another engine.
- Do not migrate blindly to the first name you hear. Every engine behaves differently with the same prompts: you need to test with your real content before switching everything.
